Article: Edmonton Flat Roof Repairs to Commercial Roof in Alberta.

Below you will find a report from the flat roof repair crew in Edmonton Alberta installing a vent and a high-dome on a tar and gravel roof. This was an hourly dispatch emergency roof repair on a local bakery. February 20, 2014: Flat Roof Crew Arrives on Site.
Arrived 10720 124th Street Edmonton Alberta with the crew. We completed our safety paperwork. I got the repair crew to start preparing for repairs. The crew shoveled snow and spud-ed iced gravel from the affected areas.
I had to go to supplier and pick up a 3 inch high dome to properly seal a penetration on the roof.
Arrived back on site. We installed a 6 inch vent for the heater and installed the 3 inch high-dome for the leaking penetration. We used gum and mesh after roof was spudded and cleaned around the leak areas. We also gummed the empty gum box with sopramastic.
The roof is water tight and repairs are completed.

Late afternoon. We got rain . Timing couldn't have been better. All sealed up and just got in the truck when the sky opened up.

June 4, 2014: Crew Arrives back on Site.  Today the rain prevented us from tearing off a larger selection than what we did. Another crew came over from their site to help us. They couldn't tear off unless he was going to tear it all off so he came to help us because I can easily seal off what we do on to the existing tar and gravel. We got a 25×25 ft section ripped , covered and sealed up before the rain came. Sky opened up around 4:00 and it has been pouring ever since June 8, 2014: Crew Arrives Back on Site After Rain Had Stopped.  Finished up the last of the plate/screw patches. Torch-On Roof Replacement High Level, June 4 2015.

Article: 2-Ply SBS Modified Torch-On Roof Replacement High Level, Alberta. Low Slope Commercial.

Torch-On Roof Replacement. 2-Ply SBS Modified Low Slope Commercial Roof. SBS modified torch-on roofing is one of the more widely used flat roof membranes in Alberta. I don't know the industry wide percentages, but I would venture to guess that we install about 30% of our roofs with torch-on. EPDM would be about 45% and the other 25% would be a mix of the other types listed below. When replacing a flat roof your primary options are traditional tar and gravel, 2 ply torch-on, single ply membrane (TPO, PVC, or EPDM), spray foam (SPF) or some form of fluid applied. Visit our local Edmonton roofing division website for a more detailed description of the various flat roofing membrane options. For torch-on, common application methods are conventional roof systems and inverted roof systems. In the manufacturing process modifiers are added to standard roofing asphalt to replace plasticizers removed during a distillation process. Bitumen is then reinforced with fiberglass or polyester fiber matting in order to increase durability and strength. SBS (styrene-butadiene-styrene) increases the flexibility of the membrane and allows it to have stronger expansion and contraction capabilities - the synthetic rubber additives increase flexibility of the membrane. Modified bitumen roof systems can be installed with torch, fluid applied asphalt, or cold adhesive. A typical SBS modified bitumen roof system (as in site report below) is a two-ply application applied with a torch using rolls of membrane that overlap the edge of the previous roll. In the example below the roof board (or fibre board) is what we refer to as an FR Board and it has the base sheet SBS applied to the fibre board before leaving the factory. In this instance the base sheet FR board is mechanically fastened to the roof deck with the cap sheet being torched on after. The benefits of 2-ply SBS modified roofing are:
  1. Torch-on SBS modified roofing is very durable. This is important for high traffic roof assemblies. This would include commercial or industrial roofs where there are perhaps a lot of rooftop units, satellites, communication towers and the like and various service technicians attending to the roof regularly.
  2. It is weather resistant and can handle impact that perhaps other membranes would have issue with.
  3. It is moderately easy to repair and maintain.
  4. The factory manufactured rolls make quality control easier than with tar and gravel BUR roofing.
  5. It is moderately flexible. This is important for climates such as Canada.
In Canada we recommend our customers seriously also consider EPDM vs. torch-on if the roof has next to no foot traffic. EPDM doesn't handle foot traffic as well as torch-on but is easier and much less costly to repair. Torch-on requires a contractor with open-flame insurance - open-flame insurance is costly and many contractors do not have it. So EPDM increases the service pool of applicators that you can call for repair. Torch-on also typically comes with a senior journeyman that can be more costly than a technician for EPDM. EPDM is actually simple enough for most handy types to repair as a do-it-yourself and torch-on should not be done by anyone but a senior qualified and open-flame insured roofer. Below is a brief installation report from one of our crews installing SBS on a commercial building in High-Level Alberta last winter. October 25, 2014: Crew Arrives On-Site for Pre-Installation Meeting. Crew arrives at job site in High Level at 9 am. We conducted a tool-box meeting for safety compliance. We reviewed the scope of work and the existing roof membrane. It was a roll-on mopped asphalt roof membrane that was in very poor condition.
